My name is Nikita. Four years ago, I escaped from a rogue unit of the government that took me off Death Row and trained me to be an assassin. I've been on the run, hunted, but fighting back ever since. With my partner Alex, my boyfriend Michael, and our best friend Birkhoff, I've been dismantling Division one mission at a time. Two years ago, one of Alex's group of recruits was scheduled for a suicide mission. Sara. It took a lot of convincing and more than a few threats, but we saved her. Five days ago, I rescued another young woman, but setting her free doesn't cut the ties of obligation. I put her out there; now I'm responsible for her...
Julie's not like Sara, Nikita thinks, as she pushes the sunglasses Wolf found for her up her nose. Sara got scheduled for cancellation because she was headstrong without the skills to back it up. Alex got away with a lot at Division, because she knew her own mind and she got the job done. Alex stayed alive because Nikita made her a walk-through and gave her all the cheat codes and power ups. Julie reminds her more of Alex, but without the chip on her shoulder.
Having a chip on your shoulder (instead of embedded in your brainstem)'s not the best way to make friends, but the armor's a good way to stay alive. Even though she survived torture, Nikita's not sure Julie's got any armor. Which is why Nikita's going to keep checking on her, and why, if she wants to come, when Nikita finds the way out, she'll bring Julie with her.
For now, she'll content herself with casual surveillance, like sitting with her back to a tree, sketching Alex's butterfly tattoo from memory into the light side of a large curl of palm bark with her knife's tip. It's either a printer's plate or a practice drawing. She'll decide after she tries stamping it somewhere. Until then, it's a meditation technique she can perform with her eyes open and helps her blend in with some of the island's quieter residents. The Nikita version of a Jedi mind trick. This is not the rogue spy you're looking for. She can go about her business. Move along.
